We had a discussion about plantation, gardening and growing our food during the camp held on 22 May 2021. The “Grow your food” challenge came up as an outcome of the discussion and was very much welcomed by all the participants.
So the challenge is here and following are the details.
What is the challenge?
It’s about growing at least one food plant at home, using the seeds found in the kitchen and use the grown plant for raw eating or for cooking purposes.
What can you grow?
You can grow food plants which can be grown using seeds found in the kitchen. Few such examples are:
Fenugreek: You can grow the leaves (Methi) using the fenugreek seeds found in the kitchen. Consume the leaves for healthy juice to delicious Pakoda. Your choice 🙂
Coriander: Grow coriander leaves (Dhaniya) using the seeds. Garnish the sabji or daal with these leaves.
Mustard: Mustard leaves (Sarson bhaji) can be grown using seeds. You can use leaves to make vegetable (Sarson da saag)
Carom seeds: You can try growing Ajwain leaves using the seeds you find in the kitchen’s spice box. Use the leaves to make juice, vegetable or blend with the roti dough.
Wheat grass: You can make a very healthy juice out of grass grown using wheat. Try chewing the grass and you will find it very sweet.
Tomatoes: All of the above can be grown easily in 7 to 12 days. But tomatoes will take time and will need a bigger pot. Worth trying though.
What do you need?
A container with at least 10 cm of depth and 20 cm of diameter (or equivalent in case of not a round vessel)
What to do?
Fill the vessel with soil. Don’t press the soil.
Sprinkle some seeds and water a bit. Just the soil should remain wet.
